Century City is a neighborhood in the Westside area of L.A. and was established where 20th Century Fox once had its film studio backlot. In 1963, the city opened its first building, the Gateway West Building. Today there are over 6,000 residents and a majority of the population consists of high income individuals.
Before Fox Studios claimed the 176-acre land, it belonged to Tom Mix, a cowboy actor who was born in 1880 and used it as a ranch. Fox Studios is still in the community and the area’s economy also depends on business towers and a shopping center. Century City is bordered by Beverly Hills, Cheviot Hills, West Los Angeles, and Westwood.
The city’s shopping center has lent its style and architecture to scenes in A Guide for the Married Man and Caprice. The plaza from the 1970’s can be seen in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes.
Although Century City does not have any public schools it is served by the Los Angeles Unified Schools District. There are three private schools in this neighborhood; Temple Isaiah Preschool and Kindergarten; VINC Academy Daycare & Preschool; and Lycée Francais de Los Angeles. Century City also has some of the highest statistics in education as over half of its residents over 25 years old, received degrees by 2000 from a four-year institution.
